Goodell-Pratt Hand Drill No 4 ½ is a small iron frame drill with a
Handle of Cocobolo. Polished Cocobolo
Handle, with Screw Cap, can be used for holding Drills. The Frame is
malleable iron, black enameled.
Large Gear and Steel Pinion are
nickel plated to prevent rusting. All teeth are machine cut. The
Gears are held together by hardened steel Guard which prevents
slipping.
All-steel Chuck, with three hardened
jaws, holds Round Shank Drills 0 to 5/32 inch in diameter.

This hand drill is provided with two speeds which enable it to be
used on all classes of work up to its extreme capacity. The two
speeds are changed by turning the Shifter Knob marked “Fast” and
“Slow”. The recently improved clutch makes shifting mechanism
stronger and easier to operate. The polished rosewood handle has a
screw cap that can be removed when handle is used for holding
drills.
Large, comfortable
knob Side and Rosewood Crank Handles are provided. The frame is
malleable iron, black enameled. All gear teeth are accurately cut by
automatic machinery. Pinions are steel. Large Gear is finished with
red enamel. The accurately turned steel spindle runs in Ball
Bearings. It has hardened end that runs in a hardened steel Cone
Bearing. The all steel Chuck has three hardened jaws for holding
Round Shank Drills 0 to 3/8 inch. Bright nickel finish. |

This
drill, originally designed and produced by Goodell-Pratt Company, is
a product of Millers Falls Co. This specific version was produced
after merger of two companies.
Millers Falls Catalog No. 41 – 1935 describes this drill as follows:
Known the
world over for its smooth operation, years of serviceability and
fine finish. Equipped with all-steel chuck for holding round shank
drills up to 3/8 inch diameter. Two speeds with ratio of 3.8 to 1
and 1.3 to 1, changed by turning the shift knob. Ball bearing
spindle. Steel pinion.
Enameled
iron frame. Large gear red enameled. Hollow tropical hardwood end
handle with screw cap. Side and crank handles mahogany finished
hardwood. All exposed metal parts nicely polished, nickeled and
buffed.
Capacity – 3/8 inch
Length – 14 ½ inches

A light, well constructed drill with a black enameled malleable iron
frame, mahogany stained hardwood end and crank handle and a
three-jawed steel chuck (spring) that holds 0 to ¼ inch round shank
drills. Steel pinion. Large gear red enameled.

Very handy drill for small work. Very good condition.
Fully restored:
Main frame and gear fully stripped and re-painted. Side and
Main handles re-stained with red mahogany and painted with 3
layers of lacquer. Spring Chuck disassembled, cleaned inside and
out. All inside surfaces polished, including jaws – for smooth
operation. All gear tight and smooth. Super nice! Great addition
to your toolbox. Lovely Tool! Ready for work.
