MF Langdon Miter Box, Model 16-1/2 by John M. Johnston 1 of 2

About ten years ago I acquired a small mitre box that I have now learned is a Millers Falls Langdon Model 16 1/2 with its original Disston 16" x 2" saw blade (see the catalog page).

Because the saw now measures 1-3/4" below the spine, it no longer cuts below the bottom plates. I added a sacrificial board and adjusted the height of the saw guides and used it that way for years.

Today I disassembled the box, cleaned with detergent and a stiff brush, and steel wool.

The box frame did not appear to be painted, so I did not do so, but did touch up with gun bluing. I made new cherry bottom plates that were 1/8th inch higher than the original dark green bottom plates.

This is a "before" image, showing the un-slotted elevators that help
distinguish this as a Millers Falls Langdon Miter Box Model 16-1/2
as opposed to the Model 15 1/2.

This is an After image. Millers Falls Langdon Miter Box Model 16-1/2
after cleaning and new cherry bottom plates. The new bottom plates
are slightly thicker than the original to compensate for the decreased
height of the saw blade due to sharpening over the years.

This is an "after" image. Note that I have assembled the elevators upside down
because I need the saw guides to be as low as possible to compensate
for the decreased height of the saw blade due to sharpening.
